Teaching & Vocal Coaching with Marcus Nance

My students are working—and thriving—on stages across Canada and beyond. They’ve appeared in major productions and with major organizations including:

  • & Juliet (Mirvish Productions)
  • Richard II and Rent (Stratford Festival)
  • Bring It On (Globe Theatre, Regina)
  • Jersey Boys (Drayton Entertainment)
  • Dixon Road (Musical Stage Company)
  • Million Dollar Quartet (Arts Club Vancouver, Tweed & Company)
  • Forever Plaid (Fallsview Casino)
  • Footloose (Stage West Calgary)
  • Off-Broadway at The Player’s Theatre
  • The Nathaniel Dett Chorale
  • America's Got Talent
  • Canada's Family's Got Talent

Some are making their mark behind the scenes—writing new works, sound designing, or music-directing major productions. One was nominated for a Dora Award for Bentboy and received the Sy & Shirley Banks Prize. Another premiered their own original musical, Tommy Rhodes. Others have released original music and sung backup for legendary artists like The Eagles.

My Approach

I want every student to feel truly themselves. That means I’ll never diminish what your natural voice wants to say. But I also believe that authentic artistry needs strong technique.

I help singers develop:

  • Relaxation and vocal freedom
  • Breath support and control
  • Resonance and natural placement
  • Space in the vocal tract
  • A connected, expressive legato line
  • Belt and mix
  • Crossover technique (classical ↔ musical theatre)

When these foundations are in place, students gain the freedom, consistency, and confidence to sing in any style—and sound like themselves doing it.

Where I Teach

I’m proud to be on faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University, Stratford Summer Music Vocal Academy, and Sheridan College, and to lead workshops and masterclasses across North America. Past invitations have included:

  • Randolph College, Lynchburg, Virginia
  • The Voices of Broadway, London, Ontario
  • New Choir, Toronto, Ontario
  • Wilfrid Laurier University
  • In the Wings: Musical Masterclass Series
  • The Latour Voice Studios (Las Vegas)
  • California State University, Fresno
  • Western University (Don Wright Faculty of Music)
  • Parry-Mansfield Performing Arts School (Colorado)
  • Charlottetown Festival Young Company (PEI)

In 2024, I was in residence at Stratford Summer Music’s Vocal Academy, where I built and led their first-ever musical theatre curriculum. I will return in 2026 for another exciting summer.

I previously served on the Program Committee for the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) in Toronto.

I’m also a longtime adjudicator with the Ontario Music Festivals Association, where I love encouraging young singers from all walks of life.

My Training

I hold a BA in Voice from California State University, Fresno, and pursued graduate studies at the University of Illinoisand the University of Texas. I’ve studied with some of the most respected teachers in the field, including:

  • Mignon Dunn, renowned opera singer
  • Richard Rhodes, renowned opera singer
  • John Wustman, pianist and coach to the world’s greatest tenors
  • Robert C. White, professor of voice at Juilliard
  • Patricia Kern, renowned mezzo and voice teacher
  • Susan Eichhorn Young, classical–musical theatre crossover specialist

What I Believe

I strive to create a space that’s inclusive, respectful, and artistically empowering. Every voice matters. Every story deserves to be heard.

Vocal Workshops

I offer engaging and inspiring vocal workshops for groups, including schools, choirs, and community organizations, as well as private sessions in my home studio. Known for helping choirs understand the fundamentals of vocal technique that enhance both individual and ensemble sound, I bring a wealth of professional experience and a passion for empowering singers.

“This was such a valuable workshop for us on New Choir's Team Bass ... What an absolute eye-opener under Marcus Nance's guidance and encouragement. Best I  have ever heard us as a group"

“Studying with you was a turning point in my journey—you not only strengthened my technique but also saved my artistry. What’s been even more special is transitioning from student to professional colleague, where I’ve seen firsthand how your talent and generosity continue to uplift those around you.”

“... in those two hours, we learned a lot from Marcus Nance. He gave us the theory, explained them in laymen's terms, and drilled us, one-by-one, and later on as a group, with the praxis like a pro that he is."

“I stepped into that room for the first time and he pushed me into ranges I had never sung before and no one else had ever asked me to do... I remember another teacher asking why a soprano would request to study with a teacher who was a bass? I told him that Marcus was the first teacher to show me kindness and who believed in me. It's pretty life-changing as a young student to come across a teacher who sees your potential before you see it in yourself.”

"When I'm feeling tense or vocally under-the-weather, even just five minutes of singing with Marcus Nance frees my voice up so much. In the year and a half that we've been working together, Marcus has helped me expand my range, strengthen my mixed voice, master singing in a variety of styles and dynamics, and identify and address the causes of vocal fatigue. He's truly the best of the best and I can't recommend working with him enough!"
