I offer private voice training for singers of all levels, grounded in the development of a healthy, reliable technique that supports a wide range of styles—from classical and opera to musical theatre and contemporary voice.
My teaching is informed by over 30 years of professional performance experience on international stages, alongside my work in university-level vocal instruction. Lessons are tailored to the individual singer and are designed to be focused, practical, and artistically engaging—whether you are pursuing singing professionally or simply looking to develop your voice.
My students are working—and thriving—on stages across Canada and beyond. They have appeared in major productions and with leading organizations including & Juliet (Mirvish Productions), Richard II and Rent (Stratford Festival), Jersey Boys (Drayton Entertainment), Million Dollar Quartet (Arts Club Vancouver, Tweed & Company), Forever Plaid(Fallsview Casino), and Off-Broadway at The Player’s Theatre, among many others. Some have gone on to create their own work, earning recognition such as Dora Award nominations and premiering original musicals, while others have released original music or performed alongside artists such as The Eagles.
I want every student to feel fully themselves as an artist. That means never diminishing what your natural voice wants to express—while building the technical foundation that allows that expression to be free, consistent, and sustainable.
In our work together, we focus on:
With these fundamentals in place, singers gain the confidence and flexibility to move between styles with ease—while sounding authentically like themselves.
I am proud to be on faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University and Sheridan College, and to work regularly with developing artists through workshops and masterclasses across North America. I have also taught at institutions and programs including California State University, Fresno; Western University (Don Wright Faculty of Music); Randolph College; The Latour Voice Studios (Las Vegas); and the Charlottetown Festival Young Company, among others.
In 2024, I was in residence at Stratford Summer Music’s Vocal Academy, where I developed and led its first musical theatre curriculum. I will return in 2026.
I have also served on the Program Committee for the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) in Toronto and am a longtime adjudicator with the Ontario Music Festivals Association.
I hold a BA in Voice from California State University, Fresno, with further studies at the University of Illinois and the University of Texas. My teachers have included Mignon Dunn, Richard Rhodes, John Wustman, Robert C. White, Patricia Kern, and Susan Eichhorn Young—artists and pedagogues whose influence continues to inform my work.
I offer engaging vocal workshops for schools, choirs, and community organizations, focusing on practical technique that strengthens both individual voices and ensemble sound. Sessions are accessible, collaborative, and rooted in professional practice.
I strive to create a space that is inclusive, respectful, and artistically empowering. Every voice matters—and every story deserves to be heard.
I am a proud member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), a global organization dedicated to excellence in voice teaching and vocal health.

"We love Marcus Nance at Fresno State! He is an outstanding masterclass teacher. He is knowledgeable in vocal technique and can move comfortably between classical and musical theatre repertoire. His thoughts on performing and the life of the working artist make the class with Marcus life-changing. He is an empathetic teacher and a great role model for our students."
“This was such a valuable workshop for us on New Choir's Team Bass ... What an absolute eye-opener under Marcus Nance's guidance and encouragement. Best I have ever heard us as a group"
“Studying with you was a turning point in my journey—you not only strengthened my technique but also saved my artistry. What’s been even more special is transitioning from student to professional colleague, where I’ve seen firsthand how your talent and generosity continue to uplift those around you.”
“... in those two hours, we learned a lot from Marcus Nance. He gave us the theory, explained them in laymen's terms, and drilled us, one-by-one, and later on as a group, with the praxis like a pro that he is."
“I stepped into that room for the first time and he pushed me into ranges I had never sung before and no one else had ever asked me to do... I remember another teacher asking why a soprano would request to study with a teacher who was a bass? I told him that Marcus was the first teacher to show me kindness and who believed in me. It's pretty life-changing as a young student to come across a teacher who sees your potential before you see it in yourself.”
"When I'm feeling tense or vocally under-the-weather, even just five minutes of singing with Marcus Nance frees my voice up so much. In the year and a half that we've been working together, Marcus has helped me expand my range, strengthen my mixed voice, master singing in a variety of styles and dynamics, and identify and address the causes of vocal fatigue. He's truly the best of the best and I can't recommend working with him enough!"
