I want my students to be their most authentic selves in every possible way, and I will never diminish what their natural voices are yearning to express. True artistry, however, is grounded in healthy, disciplined technique. To fully support each singer’s unique sound and style, I emphasize mastering the essential elements of good singing: relaxation, breath support and control, resonance placement, vocal space, and an expressive legato line. By developing these foundations, students gain the freedom and technical tools to sing with confidence, consistency, and versatility — empowering them to perform authentically in any musical style.

My students have gone on to build vibrant professional careers across Canada and beyond. Recent highlights include performances in & Juliet with Mirvish Productions; Richard II and Rent at the Stratford Festival; Jersey Boys with Drayton Entertainment; and Dixon Road with the Musical Stage Company. Others have appeared in Million Dollar Quartet (Arts Club Vancouver, Tweed and Company), Forever Plaid (Fallsview Casino), and Footloose (Stagewest Calgary), and have performed with the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and Harbour Voices Festival. One former student now composes and music-directs new works, including the world premiere of Tommy Rhodes, while another received a Dora nomination for Bentboy and earned the Sy & Shirley Banks Prize. Several students have appeared on America’s Got Talent and Canadian Family’s Got Talent, released original music, and performed as backup vocalists for internationally renowned acts like The Eagles. Many continue to work with major festivals, including Stratford, Shaw, and Charlottetown, and contribute to the industry as performers, sound designers, and music directors.

In addition to my performing career, I serve on the vocal faculty of Sheridan College’s renowned Musical Theatre Program and am frequently invited to lead masterclasses and workshops across North America. I have conducted masterclasses for Wilfrid Laurier University, In the Wings: Musical Masterclass Series, The Latour Voice Studios LLC in Las Vegas, California State University, Fresno, Parry-Mansfield Performing Arts School in Colorado, the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University, and the Charlottetown Festival Young Company. I am also an experienced adjudicator for the Ontario Music Festivals Association, where I enjoy encouraging and guiding the next generation of singers.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Voice from California State University, Fresno, and have pursued graduate studies in voice at both the University of Illinois and the University of Texas. I am honoured to have been invited to serve on the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) Program Committee for the 2025 convention in Toronto, Ontario, and to teach a series of masterclasses for the 2024 Stratford Summer Music Vocal Academy.

I am deeply committed to fostering a learning environment that is inclusive, equitable, and welcoming to all singers. Every student’s unique voice and story deserve respect and celebration.

I would be delighted to help you discover your potential, refine your technique, and find the freedom to share your authentic voice with the world.

"When I'm feeling tense or vocally under-the-weather, even just five minutes of singing with Marcus Nance frees my voice up so much. In the year and a half that we've been working together, Marcus has helped me expand my range, strengthen my mixed voice, master singing in a variety of styles and dynamics, and identify and address the causes of vocal fatigue. He's truly the best of the best and I can't recommend working with him enough!"

"We love Marcus Nance at Fresno State! He is an outstanding masterclass teacher. He is knowledgeable in vocal technique and can move comfortably between classical and musical theatre repertoire. His thoughts on performing and the life of the working artist make the class with Marcus life-changing. He is an empathetic teacher and a great role model for our students."

“Studying with you was a turning point in my journey—you not only strengthened my technique but also saved my artistry. What’s been even more special is transitioning from student to professional colleague, where I’ve seen firsthand how your talent and generosity continue to uplift those around you.”

“I stepped into that room for the first time and he pushed me into ranges I had never sung before and no one else had ever asked me to do... I remember another teacher asking why a soprano would request to study with a teacher who was a bass? I told him that Marcus was the first teacher to show me kindness and who believed in me. It's pretty life-changing as a young student to come across a teacher who sees your potential before you see it in yourself.”
